Virginia Tech Associate Professor of French and Director of the French Program, Richard Shryock is available for media interviews regarding Monday’s catastrophic fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

“Notre Dame de Paris holds a special place in the heart and history of France,” said Shryock. “Its’ picturesque elegance carved in stone is one of the most iconic representations of France, not only for the French, but for people around the world”

“It represents one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in France with its flamboyant flying buttresses and massive stained-glass windows.  Any visitor to the inside of the edifice could not help but be moved by its grandeur.”

Begun in 1160, the building has stood at the heart of Paris for more than 800 years.

“Notre Dame survived many wars, including two world wars, the French Revolution in 1789, which caused significant damage, but since the 13th century, Parisians have had it as their daily companion.”
