David Moore, associate professor of veterinary medicine in the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine and former associate vice president for research compliance from 2000 to 2017 at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of associate professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech faculty since 1985, Moore was principal or co-principal investigator on grants researching biocompatibility of implantable biotelemetry devices, animal welfare education, and epidemiology of rabies in Virginia. He authored or co-authored 27 book chapters and reviews, served as a reviewer for five professional journals, and presented invited lectures at national and international scientific meetings.

Moore served as University Attending Veterinarian from 1985 to 2001, and in an interim capacity from 2007 to 2009. He developed and established the Lab Animal Medicine Residency Program, whose graduates went on to successful careers in lab animal medicine for the government, at universities, and in the private sector.

In his role as associate vice president for research compliance, Moore developed, organized, and established the Office of Research Compliance. He oversaw the transition to electronic submission/records/databases and compliance with federal laws, regulations, and guidelines related to animal research, human subjects, recombinant DNA and biosafety, radiation safety, export and secure research compliance, and research integrity.

From 2009 to 2012, Moore participated in the design of and oversaw the commissioning and opening of three new vivarium facilities, and assisted in the process leading to the initial full accreditation of the college by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International.

Moore taught and lectured in undergraduate, graduate, and professional-level courses in all nine colleges at the university, providing human and animal research compliance training, as well as federally mandated research integrity and responsible conduct of research training. He directed one master's degree student and one doctoral degree student, and served on more than 14 master's and doctoral committees in three university programs.

In addition to his faculty appointment in the veterinary college, Moore held a faculty appointment in the Basic Science Education Department in the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and was an adjunct faculty member in the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences. He is a Diplomate in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.

Moore received his bachelor's degree and master’s degree from Louisiana Tech University and a D.V.M. from Louisiana State University.
