Local musicians take over the Moss Arts Center’s Cube for the center’s newest music jam, “Moss Pit,” on May 31, at 9 p.m. The event will feature Blacksburg musicians — singer, songwriter, and musician Johanna Vaughan, along with six-member jam band Lo Key.

The Moss Arts Center’s Cube is located at 190 Alumni Mall. Doors will open at 8:30 p.m. for the event, which will feature a cash bar.

“We’re really excited to try a different concert format here this summer,” said Ruth Waalkes, executive director of the Moss Arts Center and associate provost for the arts at Virginia Tech. “In a patron survey we did in 2018, many people suggested more local music here at the Moss, maybe a less formal setup, so we decided to see what’s possible, what people will respond to — we hope it will be fun, and something we can continue to offer.”

Vaughan is a Blacksburg-based musician and songwriter who blends acoustic ambiance and vocal presence to create a sound that is light and relaxing. Her unique performances create an intimate space for the audience and artist to share.

Vaughan incorporates her acoustic guitar with layered vocal harmonies and simple instrumentals to produce an airy, emotion-filled sound. Originally from Toronto, she has been producing and performing for over a decade, creating soundscapes textured like water and wind.

“I am elated to have the opportunity to perform in a new and unique space, and excited to share this experience with the audience,” Vaughan said. “My performance will begin with simple guitar and vocal sounds and progress into more complex arrangements with a variety of instruments, including the cajón and didgeridoo. The experience is intended to unfold as a journey for the audience, and I hope they walk away with an understanding of how each instrument adds to various and building soundscapes.”

Lo Key is Blacksburg's newest positive vibrations sensation — a sextet combining elements of funk, rock, reggae, Latin, Afro-beat, jam, jazz, and hip-hop to craft soulful songs. Featuring raw talent, beautifully crafted songs, and a rhythm section that's been playing together for six years, Lo Key consists of Russell Detko, guitar and vocals; Ryan O'Reilly, guitar and vocals; Hector Padilla, bass and vocals; Ian Harris, keyboards and vocals; Ndiame Gueye, drums and vocals; and Seth Wright, drums and vocals.
