Timely warning: Larceny of packages in residence halls
October 10, 2019
From: Virginia Tech Police Department
The Virginia Tech Police Department has received additional reports of items being stolen from residence halls, particularly Barringer Hall (240 Kent Street) and Miles Hall (410 Washington Street). The stolen items are reported as packages which have been left outside of residential rooms by common delivery companies.
Anyone with information concerning these thefts is encouraged to contact the Virginia Tech Police Department by calling (540) 382-4343 or by submitting the information online at https://police.vt.edu/crime.html.
The Virginia Tech Police Department offers the following safety tips:
- Require a signature for delivery when offered
- Make arrangements for delivery with a trusted source
- All residents are reminded to lock their doors when out of the room or sleeping. All personal items in a residence hall room can become easy targets and an unlocked door can be an invitation to a thief.
- Students should consider having items sent to hub lockers or packaging and shipping centers located in Blacksburg to hold until they can take possession. Additional fees may apply so please review these options carefully.
Community members should report all crimes and suspicious activity/persons anywhere on campus immediately to the Virginia Tech Police Department at 540-382-4343 or by dialing 911. Anonymous tips can be reported online at https://police.vt.edu/anonymous.html or via the LiveSafe mobile app (for Android and iPhone devices).
