As Hokies, we have always shared strong bonds and a deep commitment to helping others and doing what’s right. Our community and sense of service is now more important than ever.

In recent weeks, our world has changed in ways we could not have imagined. Amid a worldwide effort to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, Hokies must do their part.

Take care of yourselves and your communities by practicing social distancing. But know that there are ways Hokies can come together in a time when we must remain apart. And there are ways to make a difference in this time of turmoil. Here’s how:

  • Participate virtually in the 3.2-Mile Run in Remembrance. From April 16-18, Virginia Tech will host a virtual run during a three-day period to encourage proper distancing and adhere to state and local guidelines. Run, walk, or jog on your own and post your picture online using #VT32Run.

  • Learn what you need to know about COVID-19. Attend a virtual panel discussion April 7 at noon EST with Virginia Tech experts in epidemiology, vaccines, consumer economics, as well as stress and anxiety.

  • Share encouragement and congratulate the Class of 2020. Their commencement will be different, but it still demands attention and celebration. Record a quick video of encouragement and post it online using #HokieGrad or email it to alumni@vt.edu

Many of you have also asked how you can help our students during this extraordinary time. Fortunately, we have a Student Emergency Fund that was established several years ago and provides grants to students in acute financial need that can help with rent, food, etc.

As we navigate the unknown, one thing is clear: Together we will come through this stronger.

You can find resources on staying safe, plus all of our university updates, on our COVID-19 site. The university is closely monitoring this fast-paced, evolving situation and making frequent updates.

And finally, in these uncertain times, expect to hear from your alma mater more frequently. We want our alumni across the country and the world to know how Hokies are coming together and how we can all stay safe together.

Sincerely,

Tim Sands
President
