Investigator Webinar Series: responsibly sharing and managing data in a digital world

Digital literacy is an increasingly critical component of responsible research and innovation.
In order to help Virginia Tech researchers navigate the technical requirements and ethical standards for conducting research at a distance, the Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance (SIRC), a unit within the Office of Research and Innovation, is hosting two Investigator Series webinars that will provide researchers with information about tools and technologies that are available to help them to transfer research data from one institution to another and conduct research and manage data at a distance.
The two Investigator Series webinars will be held on Aug. 18 and 20 and are open to all students, faculty, and staff.
“Enrichment and outreach efforts are at the heart of SIRC’s mission to support scholarly excellence at Virginia Tech by fostering ethical decision-making and ensuring research regulatory compliance,” said Kory Trott, director of research integrity and consultation. “To achieve their goals, researchers often need to interact with the public. For those interactions to be productive, the public must trust that researchers are collecting, storing, and sharing their data responsibly. Data management practices that do not meet current industry standards erode the public’s trust, which then hinders the researcher’s ability to conduct important research.”
The hour-long research webinars provide professional development opportunities for the research community to engage in conversations about research ethics and compliance. This ongoing dialogue helps to foster an environment where research ethics is discussed, debated, and ultimately incorporated into the design, conduct, and dissemination of research.
Webinar 1: Sharing Research Data – Yours, Mine, and Ours
The Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance and the Office of Sponsored Programs have collaborated to define a process for transferring data from one institution to another. In this training, tools and processes to make the data transfer process a smooth one will be shared. In addition, the life cycle of a transfer agreement from data evaluation, intake, negotiation through to final signing will also be discussed.

Webinar 2: Telework: Managing Research Data in a Connected World
The Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance and the Collaborative Computing Solutions within the Division of IT are aware of the challenges of adjusting to research at a distance. In this training, tools and technologies will be discussed in addition to options for every stage of the research data collection process from collection to data destruction. Real world examples of using the available offerings to make the transition to physically distanced research will be provided.
