WHAT:  Virginia Tech public health expert Lisa M. Lee will testify today before the U.S. House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight about the critical issue of how the nation collects, uses, and communicates the meaning of health data during the global COVID-19 crisis and beyond.

At the remote hearing titled “Data for Decision-Making: Responsible Management of Data during COVID-19 and Beyond,” Lee will provide testimony about the role of CDC epidemiologists in analyzing and validating data that is collected via the National Healthcare Safety Network and how the federal government can invest in a long-term public health surveillance strategy beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lee is a public health expert specializing in infectious disease epidemiology and public health ethics. She also serves as the associate vice president for research and innovation at Virginia Tech, where she leads the division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance. Widely published in both public health science and ethics, she is also the lead editor of "Principles and Practice of Public Health Surveillance" (OUP 2010), a widely used text in schools of public health.
