George A. Clum, professor of psychology in the College of Science at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of professor emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Department of Psychology since 1975, Clum’s scholarship specialized in clinical science research and his research in the areas of anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, and suicide were internationally recognized. Clum also did pioneering research in self-administered treatments for psychological disorders.

He was a founding member of department’s clinical science doctoral program in the mid-1970s. The program is accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System, recognition of its consistent high-quality, science-centered education and training in clinical psychology. The program also is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science and the Clinical Child and Pediatric Psychology Training Council.

An effective classroom instructor, Clum taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses ranging from Introduction to Psychology to Ethics. He advised 54 students on master’s degree and doctoral degree dissertations and helped all his students develop successful careers in both academic and organization settings. He was an active faculty member in the clinical science graduate programs.

Clum earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology and philosophy from the University of Scranton in 1963 and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in clinical psychology from St. John’s University in 1965 and 1968.
