M. Joseph Sirgy, the Virginia Tech Real Estate Professor of Marketing in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of Virginia Tech Real Estate Professor Emeritus by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.

A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1979, Sirgy has focused on marketing, business ethics, and quality-of-life in his scholarship. He is a co-founder of the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies, the Macromarketing Society, and the Community Indicators Consortium.

Sirgy has received numerous professional awards and distinctions, including the 2012 EuroMed Management Research Award for outstanding achievements and groundbreaking contributions to well-being and quality-of-life research and the 2019 Robert W. Nason Award for extraordinary and sustained contributions to the field of macromarketing.

In the classroom, Sirgy has taught a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses ranging across the marketing, MBA, and real estate curriculums. His teaching at Virginia Tech has been recognized with numerous awards, including the Pamplin Excellence in Teaching Award, the Warren Holtzman Outstanding Educator Award, and the Certificate of Teaching Excellence.

Currently, he is serving as editor-in-chief for the Journal of Macromarketing, co-editor for Springer’s human wellbeing and policy making book series, executive director of the Management Institute for Quality-of-Life Studies, and director of development for the International Society for Quality-of-Life Studies. He is also serving in an honorary role as extraordinary professor at the Work Well Research Unit at North-West University, Potchefstroom campus, South Africa.

Sirgy received a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles; a master’s degree from California State University, Long Beach; and a Ph.D. from the University of Massachusetts.
