By the time James Leslie Whitehurst Jr. graduated in 1963, he’d broken the color barrier in the residence halls, dining halls, and on the dance floor at the traditional Ring Dance. He’d also go on to become the first Black member of Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors in 1970.

With Thursday's action, the residence hall at 570 Washington Street, SW (formerly known as Lee Hall) is named for the late Janie and William Hoge, a local African American couple. The residence hall at 240 Kent Street (formerly known as Barringer Hall) is named in honor of James Leslie Whitehurst Jr. ’63.
