Zerin Mahzabin Khan, a doctoral student in biomedical engineering and mechanics as well as the computational tissue engineering program, was awarded the Postgraduate Scholarship-Doctoral award from NSERC for her work developing a minimally invasive treatment for glioblastoma. She is the first-ever Virginia Tech student recipient of this award.

Over the past eight years, the school has made deliberate strides in increasing its diversity. Nearly half of enrolled students are of an ethnic or racial minority, and 9 percent of the most recently entered class belong to groups that are underrepresented in medicine. In addition, nearly 25 percent are considered low income, and 16 percent are the first in their family to attend college.
