The VT Engage team offers a variety of virtual events this summer. Sessions will cover topics around food security, systems thinking and student leadership competencies, food waste, accessibility in communications, designing service-learning courses, the landscape of student voting at Virginia Tech. Unless otherwise indicated, all events are open to students, employees, and community members. All of events will be held over Zoom. Learn more and register for any session at the below links.

These events are part of Experiential Learning at Virginia Tech’s work this summer to bring virtual opportunities to the VT community. Learn more about the sessions being offered by the Office of Undergraduate Research on building research skills as well as Career and Professional Development’s sessions focused on career readiness.

Lunch & Learn: Food insecurity discussion series
Mondays, June 15, 22, 29 (12 – 1 pm)
This discussion series is centered around global and regional food insecurity issues. Each week, participants will watch short videos or hear from a speaker, then reflect as a group on the issues presented that week. Sign up today for any session!

Systems Thinking & the Student Leadership Competencies
Wednesday, June 17 (1 - 2 pm)
This interactive workshop will utilize systems thinking activities to help attendees learn how to better understand complex social problems and determine their role in both creating and resolving them. Participants will be asked to think critically about their ability to affect change through the lens of Corey Seemiller's Student Leadership Competencies. Register today!

Don't Throw that Away! Reducing Food Waste webinar
Tuesday, June 23 (1 – 2 pm)
During this session, participants will learn easy strategies for reducing food waste. Participants will be guided through a series of recipes designed to utilize common forms of food waste. Along the way, information will be provided about Campus Kitchen, food waste in the United States, and the environmental consequences of throwing food into the garbage. Register today!

Accessible Communication Considerations
Wednesday, June 24 (2 - 3 pm)
This session will present participants with tangible ideas to make communication, particularly in marketing, more accessible, how to avoid common accessibility mistakes, and more.  The session will cover topics such as using accessibility features on social media, describing different types of images, language to use when describing disability, and more. Hokies Vote: Understanding the landscape of student voters at Virginia Tech
