Severe thunderstorms predicted? Know what to do

Burruss Hall with lightning

From: Emergency Management

Severe thunderstorms are a common occurrence during the warmer months in Virginia. Lightning, damaging winds, hail, and heavy rainfall are associated threats.

If a thunderstorm watch is issued, continue to monitor local weather conditions. If a thunderstorm warning is issued, seek shelter immediately.

If you are outside, seek shelter inside the closest sturdy building. Do not lock doors behind you in case others also need to seek shelter. In addition:

  • Continue to follow local weather. Stay inside until the storm has passed.
  • Unplug appliances and electrical items to avoid power surges from lightning.
  • If you must travel, navigate cautiously during severe weather. Be aware of downed trees, power lines, and other debris.
