Guidance on face coverings for employees at Virginia Tech facilities
May 27, 2020
From: Virginia Tech Emergency Management, Virginia Tech Procurement
In keeping with the goals articulated in Governor Ralph Northam’s Executive Order Sixty-Three, Virginia Tech will require the use of face coverings beginning on Friday, May 29, for employees at all university facilities in the commonwealth.
As defined by the governor’s office, “a face covering includes anything that covers your nose and mouth, such as a mask, scarf, or bandana.” The statewide directive is grounded in CDC recommendations on face coverings in public settings.
Please note that face coverings do not replace the need to practice physical distancing. The coverings help provide a measure of controlling the spread of the novel coronavirus when in public settings where other distancing measures may be difficult to consistently maintain.
Employees that have their own or homemade face coverings are encouraged to use them while working on campus. The Virginia Department of Health offers these helpful guidelines around homemade cloth face covers.
Departments that need face coverings for employees in the immediate future to support the executive order should make their requests through their departmental representative to the university’s Incident Management Team. Departments that do not have representation on the Incident Management Team may submit their request via the Resource Request for Consolidated Inventory Form.
The allocation of inventory will be based on availability and prioritized for units that publicly interface with the university community. The request will be reviewed by the Logistics Section Chief and the Incident Management Team. If the request is approved, the order will be coordinated with the Surplus Property team and the requestor will be notified of a pickup date and time.
When the university transitions out of essential operations status into its next operating phase, this request process will change. Additional details around what this future process will look like, and which critical supplies will be available to request, can be found at https://www.procurement.vt.edu/AcquisitionPPE.html.
More information related to face covering use and research and student use of face coverings will be shared in the near future via the VT Daily News and on the Virginia Tech COVID-19 site.
