From: Virginia Tech Operations

As summer begins, and construction and road improvements are in full swing, there will be multiple traffic disruptions in and around the Blacksburg campus.

Please use caution around construction and road repairs zones, use alternate routes when possible, and give yourself a little more time on trips.

Visit the Campus Closures Map for the latest traffic and pedestrian impacts across campus.

A list of potential impacts can be found below:

Scheduled Road Closures*:

  • Kent Street Closure:                                                                      May 20 to August 11
  • Drillfield Drive exit to West Campus Drive Closure:            May 20 to July 1
  • Beamer Way Closure                                                                      May 20 to June 3
  • Perry Street Closure (tentative)                                                 July 1 to July 8

* See the Campus Closures Map for which segment of the road will be closed

Construction and Closure Details:

Creativity and Innovation District – Kent and Otey Streets: There will be ongoing pedestrian and road impacts in the area surrounding the proposed Creativity and Innovation District next to the Graduate Life Center between Kent and Otey Streets. Please follow all flagging operations and signs for alternate routes.

North End Center Garage: A summer project to upgrade all the light fixtures in the North End Center Garage will begin on May 20. The contractor will start work on level 6 and then progress towards level 1, one level at a time. All the drive lanes will remain open during the project, so a vehicle could, for example, still travel from level 1 to level 7. Only parking spaces will be impacted. Effective May 20, all of the parking spaces on level 6 will be closed until the contractor is finished with level 6. After which, half of the parking spaces on each subsequent level will remain open while the work is taking place. Please contact Parking and Transportation at 540-231-3200 with any questions.

Tunnel top repairs - Drillfield Drive:
To accommodate tunnel top repairs next to Davidson Hall, the Drillfield Drive exit onto West Campus Drive will be closed between approximately May 20 and July 1.

Road repairs - Beamer Way: To accommodate road repairs, there will be a full road closure of Beamer Way from approximately May 20 through June 3 next to Lane Stadium.

Perry Street: Beginning July 1 lasting through early July, a new steam line will be installed across Perry Street in the proximity of the crosswalk between the Perry Street Parking Garage and Whittemore Hall. There may be intermittent road and pedestrian closures in this area. Please visit the Campus Closures Map for the latest updates.

VDOT Paving:
VDOT will be paving roads in and around campus throughout the summer months. Planned projects include:

  • Approximately May 20 - June 30: Night paving (8 p.m. – 6 a.m.) of Beamer Way from Southgate Drive north to the dead end. Traffic will be maintained by flagging operations.
  • Between May 20 - June 30: Night paving of Research Center Drive from Smoot Drive to the Town of Blacksburg limits. Traffic will be maintained by flagging operations.
  • Between May 20 - June 30: Possible patching around the Drillfield.

The Division of Operations realizes these traffics are an inconvenience and appreciates the campus community’s understanding as these needed improvements are made.

In light of the potential road delays, summer in Blacksburg offers great opportunities for other alternative transportation options such as walking through campus, Roam NRV bikeshare, or Blacksburg Transit. Please feel free to contact Nick Quint at 540-231-2701 for more information on alternative transportation.

Please visit the Campus Closures Map for the most up-to-date traffic and pedestrian impacts across campus. Follow all signage and flagging operations in place on the road. Additional information can be found at the facilities Campus Traffic Impacts site.
