The Virginia Tech Police Department has learned of reports across Virginia of individuals receiving unsolicited packages of unidentified seeds in the mail.

The types of seeds in the packages are unknown at this time and may be invasive plant species. If you receive such seeds, it is important to follow the directions below from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS):

  • Do not open the seed packets;
  • Do not plant the seed packets;
  • Do not throw the seeds in the trash, flush them down the drain, or expose them to the environment in any way; and
  • VDACS encourages anyone who has received unsolicited seeds in the mail to contact the Office of Plant Industry Services (OPIS) through the ReportAPest@vdacs.virginia.gov email and await further guidance.
