Make a difference with a donation to Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign

From: Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign

Editor's note: The following is an open letter to Virginia Tech employees from Kelly Oaks, assistant vice president for Equity and Accessibility. Oaks is the honorary chair of the 2017 Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign.

Dear colleagues,

We are already a few weeks into the 2017 Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign! Thanks to the Ut Prosim (That I May Serve) spirt of the Hokie Nation, I am proud to let you know that we raised over $28,000 during the first week alone of the campaign and are now nearing $124,000.

My mom, before she retired, was a social worker who managed a homeless shelter, food bank, and many other assistance programs. Growing up, I had many opportunities to volunteer and through these opportunities I learned:

  • Overall, people are more alike than we are different
  • At any moment someone’s circumstances could drastically change and leave them in desperate need of assistance
  • A small act of human kindness and decency could make an amazing difference

The Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign is our opportunity to make a difference and we are already off to a great start. People are giving and departments across the university are showing their support for the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign by holding fundraisers.  When I see our campus coming together in this way to positively impact others, it makes me remember why I chose to work at Virginia Tech.

We still have a long way to go, but I know that with your help, Virginia Tech employees can show the community that we too embrace the Ut Prosim way of life.

Remember, every gift, no matter how small, can have a huge impact on our community. With more than 1,000 charities to choose from, including dozens located right here in the New River Valley, you can truly make a difference.

Just imagine the lives that could be changed if each of us made a donation; the hungry would be fed, the homeless would have shelter, and veterans would receive the support they need. With your help, the possibilities are endless.

Please join me in supporting this year’s Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign. While the campaign will continue through Dec. 20, I encourage you to make your donation today and together we will break that goal!
