University to offer training on Scopus, SciVal and Funding Institutional data products

From: University Libraries and Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost

Virginia Tech is providing training for faculty and staff on three new subscription-based data products designed for academic and research publishing and funding application. Scopus, SciVal and Funding Institutional are available through Elsevier and can be accessed from the University Libraries homepage.

Scopus is an abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature with bibliometric tools to track, analyze and visualize research. It contains over 22,000 titles from more than 5,000 publishers around the world, covering the fields of science, technology, medicine, social sciences, arts and humanities. Scopus has over 55 million records dating back to 1823, 84 percent of which contain references dating from 1996.

SciVal provides metrics based on publications by country, institution, department or author. Users can compare any of these groups, find collaborators based on similar publications and identify trends in the metrics. More than 12,500 research institutions and their associated researchers from over 230 nations worldwide are indexed.

Funding Institutional allows researchers to search for grant opportunities and provides historical data about awards and related publications. This data can be used to select opportunities that are the best fit and tailor proposals based on past success. Additionally, users can track award trends, find potential collaborators, and improve their understanding of the competitive landscape. Searches can be narrowed down by location, special interest (limited submission, amount greater than $1 million, deadline within three months, multidisciplinary, or foundation or private sponsor) and/or by subject area. It includes information on more than 11,000 funding bodies and more than 24,000 active opportunities.

Virginia Tech subscribers will need to use their vt.edu email address to register for an account.

There is one session planned for SciVal and two sessions each for Funding Institutional and Scopus. All training sessions will be streamed in the North End Center, Training Room 2420/30. Participants can also join by WebEx from the links below.
