Virginia Tech employees begin receiving COVID-19 vaccine
From: Human Resources
As the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) continues with distribution plans for the COVID-19 vaccine, some Virginia Tech employees are already being vaccinated. Others will be vaccinated soon.
Virginia Tech employees who fall into VDH’s 1a group have been vaccinated or are in the process of getting the vaccine.
Following Monday’s announcement from the New River Health District, university employees who work on the Blacksburg campus or in the New River Valley and that fall into the 1b group are also now eligible for the vaccine. VDH defines group 1b as frontline essential employees who work directly with the public, people age 65 and older, and people age 16 through 64 years with a high risk medical condition or disability that increases their risk of severe illness from COVID-19. Additional information regarding specific job categories in the 1b group can be found on VDH’s website.
In partnership with the New River Health District, Virginia Tech is working to identify employees that work in Blacksburg and the New River Valley that fall into the 1b group and that may be eligible for vaccination. Once identified, these employees will be registered and able to receive their vaccine through the New River Health District, subject to availability.
Outside of Blacksburg, Virginia Tech is working to identify employees at those facilities who fall into the 1b group and that may be eligible for the vaccine. Once identified, the university will work with local health districts on how these employees can be vaccinated.
Virginia Tech is also identifying current employees and retirees who are age 65 and older to ensure they are aware that they may pre-register now to receive the vaccine. For employees or retirees age 65 or older and:
- Living in the New River Valley: You may pre-register to receive your vaccine through the New River Health District at www.nrvroadtowellness.com.
- Living outside of the New River Valley: Check your local Virginia health district office to see if they have a pre-registration process for the vaccine.
- Living outside of Virginia: Vaccine distribution varies state by state; contact your local health department for more information.
The rest of Virginia Tech’s employee population currently falls into VDH’s 1c group. The university will continue to stay in contact with the VDH and New River Health District and provide additional information once the state’s vaccine plan for the 1c group is known.
Employees are encouraged to visit VDH’s COVID-19 vaccine site for updates, frequently asked questions, and more information. A survey is available on VDH’s website that can be taken to find which phase of the vaccination campaign you fall in. For additional questions about the COVID-19 vaccine, contact VDH’s hotline 877-ASK-VDH3 (877-275-8343).
