Closed captions now integrated into Zoom

From: Division of Information Technology

Virginia Tech's Zoom platform now has free, automatic speech recognition (ASR) closed captions and live transcripts integrated into the meeting interface. Captioning video content, including meetings, is an essential part of creating an accessible and inclusive environment for employees and students. Hosts can enable closed captions (CC) in their meetings by selecting the “CC Live Transcript” button in the control bar at the bottom of the meeting window. Once captions are enabled, participants can use the CC button to manage the captions they see.

ASR captions are not 100% accurate and do not satisfy the accessibility requirements for live public events. Hosts should check the available captioning options. Some meetings qualify for free professional live caption services with accuracy rates above 99 percent.

Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Services (TLOS), a unit of the Division of Information Technology, is the service provider for Zoom at Virginia Tech. For assistance, contact 4Help.vt.edu.
