Global travel requirements for Virginia Tech employees

From the Global Education Office:

The Global Education Office (GEO) is charged with tracking all travel abroad (including Canada) for VT employees and students.

All VT employees are required to obtain an approved travel authorization (no matter where the funding derives from) before their trip’s departure date. Ideally, this approval should be obtained two-three weeks prior to departure, so that the GEO can be notified of your travel and provide you with important guidance on how to enroll in the mandatory medical and security assistance insurance, and resources to use to conduct your due diligence in preparation to travel abroad.

If you are unable to obtain an approved travel authorization in the time needed, contact Randy Penson, assistant director for global safety and risk management, at rpenson@vt.edu or ( 540) 231-2867. Provide the following information:

  • city/country of travel
  • date of departure
  • date of return
  • general purpose of trip (for example, attend XYZ conference)

Travelers can use the Hokie Sentinel Quick Reference guide to remind themselves of this important requirement.

Contact Randy Penson with any questions.
