All students must register to travel abroad

From: Outreach and International Affairs

Virginia Tech students (PhD, graduate, undergraduate) traveling abroad are required to complete the Hokie Sentinel Global Travel Assessment (HSGTA). Students participating on faculty-led study abroad programs or registered student organizations do not have to complete the assessment.

Information from the assessment provides Virginia Tech the necessary details to track student travel. The assessment also serves as a guide for students to conduct their due diligence in preparation for the time abroad.

Directions on how to enroll in the mandatory medical and security assistance insurance, register the trip in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), obtain information on security issues, identify vaccine requirements, and many other important bits of information are all found within the assessment.

Completed assessments should be submitted to Randy Penson, assistant director for global safety and risk management, at rpenson@vt.edu by the following deadlines:

  • Oct. 15 for winter and spring travel
  • March 31 for summer and fall travel

Students will complete the “Individual Student Abroad” worksheet/tab only.

The latest Hokie Sentinel Global Travel Assessment and the Hokie Sentinel Quick Reference guide can be found on the Global Education Office website.
