Mothers, grandmothers of school-age children sought for study

From: Social Development Lab

Are you a mother or grandmother of a child in 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade? Do you like to tell family stories together?

We're working with local Southwest Virginia families for a three-generation research study on:

  • What grandmothers and mothers think and feel about children's emotions
  • How grandmothers' and mothers' values impact the ways they encourage and discourage emotions
  • How grandmothers, mothers, and children tell family stories together
  • Children's social competence

Grandmothers, mothers, and children will all participate together. Grandmothers and mothers will complete questionnaires, talk about the ways that their values impact how they think, feel, and encourage/discourage emotion in the family, as well as talk with the child about an event that made the child happy and an event that made the child sad. Children will complete a survey with the researcher.

The hour-long visit will take place in the Social Development Lab at Virginia Tech OR at your home, whichever you prefer. Free parking will be provided if you come to Virginia Tech.

For your participation, grandmothers and mothers each will receive a $15 gift card and children will receive a small gift!
