From: The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation’s Division of Scholarly Integrity and Research Compliance

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) has updated the Protocol Management System (IRB submission software) to incorporate the submission of the COVID-19 Resumption of In-person Research Requirements Template. Researchers should no longer e-mail their resumption plans and should follow the instructions below to submit their plans.

Steps to submit plans to resume in-person human subjects research activities:

1) Access the Virginia Tech IRB Protocol Management online system.

2) Select the protocol you want to resume activities.

3) From the summary of that protocol, please select the option “Submit Plan to Resume In-Person HSR Activities."

The HRPP office will begin a review of the plan once it has been submitted. The HRPP staff may request clarifications or additional information during the review of a submission. Once it has been determined the plan meets the requirements, the researcher will receive correspondence from the HRPP office that the plan is acceptable for resuming in-person human subjects research activities described in the approved protocol.

If the researcher is submitting a new study that includes in-person activities, please submit these documents and upload them to the supporting documents section in the Other/Misc. category:

  • Risk Mitigation SOP
  • Lay Language SOP
  • Consent Addendum

For any questions during the submission process, please contact the protocol coordinator that has been assigned to the researcher’s protocol. If a coordinator has not been assigned, please contact for assistance.
