Schiffert Health Center provides guidance for students seeking COVID-19 testing

Posted: Sept. 1, 2020

From: Student Affairs

Schiffert Health Center is aware that many students are trying to figure whether they need a COVID-19 test, how to get a COVID-19 test, or what they should do whether or not they are scheduled to get a test.

The following guidance will help students know what they should do next:

If you have symptoms or generally feel sick…

Students who are experiencing symptoms associated with COVID-19 or who otherwise feel sick should call Schiffert (540-231-6444) and request a medical appointment. Explain your symptoms when you call, and you will be given an appointment time. That appointment time should be within 24 hours of your call. Please do not request a medical appointment if you are not symptomatic, as it is critical that medical staff at Schiffert see students with symptoms as soon as possible for their well-being and the well-being of the community.

If you have symptoms, you should self-quarantine until you have been tested and received your results. Results typically take two to three days to receive.

If you have been called by the Virginia Department of Health and told you have been contact traced…

Students who have been contact traced to a positive or potential positive COVID-19 case but do not have symptoms should call Schiffert (540-231-6444) and ask for an ArcPoint COVID test. You should mention that you have been told by a Virginia Department of Health representative that you need a test due to contact tracing. You will need to wait 5 days from your exposure date to be tested per CDC guidelines, but you should call immediately to schedule your appointment. These appointments must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance of your test date. Please share your exposure date when you call so your test can be scheduled appropriately.

If you have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive case, you should self-quarantine until you have been tested and received your results. Results typically take 2 to 3 days to receive.

If you believe you may have been exposed to someone who has COVID-19…

Students who have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 by being around them for more than 15 minutes, closer than 6 feet, regardless of whether the person was wearing a mask or not, should call Schiffert (540-231-6444) and ask for an ArcPoint COVID test. Please share that you believe you may have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 and would like a test. You will need to wait 5 days from your exposure date to be tested per CDC guidelines, but you may call once you believe you have been exposed to schedule your appointment. These appointments must be scheduled at least 48 hours in advance of your test date.

If you have been exposed to a COVID-19 positive case, you should self-quarantine until you have been tested and received your results. Results typically take 2 to 3 days to receive.

Be prepared when you call

Schiffert is experiencing a high volume of calls. The best way for Schiffert staff to assist all students is for you to know which of the three types of appointments listed above you will need. Please be prepared when you call.

When possible, please reference the Schiffert Health Center website for non-urgent information or other health related resources to free up phone lines for those who need urgent medical assistance. If you do not get through when you call, please be patient and call again.

Your test results will be communicated either by phone call or by secure electronic notification.
