Inaugural greater Washington, D.C., metro area transportation survey findings to help guide long-term planning in region
From: Virginia Tech Transportation Services
In September 2020, the Virginia Tech Innovation Campus Transportation Subcommittee conducted an inaugural transportation survey in the greater Washington, D.C., metro area. The survey aimed to gain a better understanding of how Virginia Tech community members, including students, faculty, and staff, travel to, from, and between university facilities in the region.
Survey results will help develop options for traveling between current and future Virginia Tech locations, and to develop parking management strategies for these locations. Additional surveys will help guide a multi-year transportation planning process ahead of the opening of the Innovation Campus in Alexandria.
An executive summary report of initial findings underscores the need for a flexible and convenient parking and transportation program in the region to serve the unique needs of faculty, staff, and students.
The results emphasize opportunities to enhance interconnectivity among Virginia Tech facilities in the region, including exploring an intra-campus shuttle service and a universal parking system for all regional university facilities.
Additionally, survey results highlight opportunities to help improve access to alternative transportation for university members through discounted Metro passes and greater outreach and education.
