Rising eighth grade students from Montgomery County and Roanoke City recently spent the day at Virginia Tech to learn about career opportunities in the traditionally male-dominated facilities industry.
The event, Girls Day 2017, is the first of its kind in the area and is being held to encourage girls’ interest in STEM-related fields.
The students split up into groups and toured eight different locations and heard from dozens of women who work in the Facilities Department for a behind-the-scenes look at the industry. The tours included stops at the Quarry, Sterrett Facility Complex, Chiller Plant, Central Steam Plant, the recently completed Derring Steps, as well as several active construction sites: Upper Quad, Rector Field House, and Southgate/460 Interchange.
Here's a look at their day.
