Virginia Tech Summer Academy students from Track 3 ( American Indian Studies and First-Year Writing) were part of a special field trip through wooded areas around Virginia Tech's campus, led by Jeffery Kirwan, emeritus professor and extension specialist in the Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation in the College of Natural Resources and Environment.

Summer Academy allows students and faculty members to participate in special experiences such as this one, as well as other local and regional excursions.

Summer Academy (July 2–August 14, 2017) is a special opportunity for first-year students to jump-start their academic experience by earning six hours of course credit through a track program. Summer Academy features 15 tracks consisting of two classes (six college course credits).

Virginia Tech is one of a select number of universities in the nation to offer a Summer Academy program. More than 1,300 students have benefited from Summer Academy since it launched in 2012.
