Statement on recent decision regarding Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals

September 5, 2017

From: Division of Student Affairs and Office for Inclusion and Diversity

Today the White House announced that DACA [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] will be phased out over the next six months. The DACA program protected young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. as children. These students are called “Dreamers” – a name that embraces the potential, the aspirations, and the hopes we have for all our students. We hope Congress will consider this matter soon in fairness to the individual dreamers, their families and our community.

These students are valued members of the Virginia Tech community and we are dedicated to making resources available to them, and creating for them a sense of belonging and wellbeing that is crucial for academic, personal, and social success. As information is made available, and as we have answers to the many questions that are being raised, we will update our website.

The promise of a Virginia Tech education is an opportunity that is — and should continue to be — for everyone. It is incumbent on all of us to create the environments in which students can succeed and thrive. Together, we create Hokies who will launch from this university and change the world.

Virginia Tech is a dynamic and inclusive community that consists of students, scholars, faculty, staff, alumni, families, visitors, and neighbors from a wide variety of cultures, backgrounds, and viewpoints. We appreciate differences and embrace the complexities of living in a multicultural, global society. We believe the collaboration of cultures brings forth greater creativity, innovation, understanding, and learning for everyone.
