A two-time Virginia Tech graduate with more than 20 years of experience in academia, architecture, and construction, McCoy is eager to lead the department into a new era of growth and innovation in intelligent infrastructure.
Sumpter, previously assistant director of United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd, will lead engagement of the college’s 15,000 alumni and 2,200 students, providing events, networking, and relationship-building outreach and programming.
Watford officially assumed her yearlong tenure as president of the American Society for Engineering Education at the society’s annual conference in Columbus, Ohio, on June 28. She was elected to the position in June 2016.
Grizzard was an expert in the urban water cycle and a dedicated member of the Virginia Tech community. After receiving his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech, Grizzard would go on to work as a professor and the director of the Occoquan Watershed Monitoring Laboratory at the university from 1974 to 2014.
A team of researchers from universities, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations all over the world compiled camera-trap data from 12 countries to evaluate impacts on 96 carnivore species, ranging from Arctic foxes to Sumatran tigers.
A portion of the gift was matched by three alumni from Virginia Tech who wanted to begin nurturing a spirit of philanthropy among the graduating medical students back to the university and Virginia Tech Carilion. The alumni contributions were contingent upon 100 percent participation by class members in donating.
A native of Emporia, Virginia, Tillar is a member of the university’s Class of 1969. He earned a bachelor’s in biological sciences, a master’s in student personnel services, and a doctor of education degree, all from Virginia Tech.
A member of the university community since 1986, Heatwole made a significant impact on the improvement of water quality in the Chesapeake Bay through his work to develop and apply geospatial analysis tools for mapping, analysis, and modeling of watershed hydrology and pollutant fate and transport from field to watershed scales.
