Virginia Tech officially gained a new college Sunday and expanded its expertise in the health sciences with the integration of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. The university now offers an M.D. degree for the first time.
The research team was led by Steven Poelzing, an associate professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, and Soufian AlMahameed, who was a clinician associate professor at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and the director of Carilion Clinic’s Center for Atrial Fibrillation at the time of data collection.

Informational workshops hosted recently by Adaptive Brain and Behavior Destination Area brought together faculty and researchers to learn about work in brain plasticity as it pertains to decision-making, physical and psychological trauma, and development across the lifespan.
The report, conducted by the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service’s Center for Economic and Policy Studies, analyzed current and future spending and employment growth at the campus, which is a physical representation of the unique partnership between a public institution, Virginia Tech, and Carilion Clinic, the third-largest private health system in Virginia.
The project has won the support of the Virginia Catalyst, which has awarded a $500,000 grant to the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute to further develop and commercialize a multi-modality system approach to aid in the diagnosis and management of mild traumatic brain injury, known as mTBI.
