  • September 19, 2019 - 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • October 15, 2019 - 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
  • November 14, 2019 - 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.  

Overview

Virginia Tech faculty and staff are often called on to provide context to the news of the day or explain cutting-edge research in media interviews.  This workshop focuses on preparing for and participating in interviews with print, online and broadcast news outlets.  The course will assist you in developing the background required to understand the media and foster confidence to be effective in interviews with reporters on TV, radio or in print.

Objectives

  • Understand the importance and benefits of representing Virginia Tech in media interviews.
  • Learn best practices for interview preparation, identifying your audience along with appropriate key talking points.
  • Learn and practice strategies for responding to difficult questions.
  • Develop skills for explaining and delivering a message that is clear, substantive, conversational and media-friendly.
 
Class size will be limited to approximately 20 participants.  Instruction will be led by Bill Foy (Virginia Tech Media Relations and former TV news director) and Dawn Jefferies (Virginia Tech Associate Director of Visual Strategy  and former TV news anchor).
