Deborah Cook, Verizon Professor of Business Information Technology in the Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, has been conferred the title of Verizon Professor Emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the university community since 1993, Cook is known as an outstanding teacher and researcher. Her research focused on the development and implementation of techniques to facilitate process improvement within business and manufacturing settings. She has received external funding from the National Science Foundation, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Advanced Technology Program, and the USDA Forest Service.

Cook authored more than 40 articles that have been published in several journals including IIE Transactions, Decision Sciences, European Journal of Operational Research, and the International Journal of Production Research. In addition, she served as editor-in-chief of the Production and Inventory Management Journal.

In the classroom, Cook taught a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses, and her teaching was recognized with the Pamplin College Certificate of Teaching Excellence and the University Certificate of Teaching Excellence. She advised numerous graduate students, serving as chair of three doctoral dissertation committees and as a member of 22 doctoral committees.

Cook received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Virginia Tech and a Ph.D. from Texas A&M University.
